Definition of the term, "heading tags"

heading tags

Also known as: "H# tags", "headings"

Heading tags (H1, H2, H3, H4, H5, H6) are standard HTML (HyperText Markup Language) elements used to define headings and subheadings on a web page. On this page, the main heading ("definition of the term, "heading tags"") is an H1 tag (defined as the most important or main heading), whereas the sub headings ("heading tags" and "related terms and definitions") have been marked up as H2 tags (less important, but still main page headings.

It has been speculated that search engines use H# markup as one factor to define the subject area of any given web page - the theory being that the text within a H1 tag will most likely define what the page is about. Although there is little evidence to support the claim that H1 tags carry a great deal of weight when search engines "score" a page, it is a likely approach to take and as such it's a key on page factor to consider.
